Central Station (380 Congress Street Portland, Maine)- The Thin Red Line
12 September 2015 Portland, ME- In firefighting, the Thin Red Line is in reference to the ultimate sacrifice firefighters make in the defense of their communities, the Line Of Duty Death. This long exposure taken on Saturday, September 12th, allowed the traffic on Congress Street to create trails of red light from the brake lights as cars passed the station and pulled up to the stop light beside it. I was fortunate enough that the bay for Engine 5 was open as they were preparing to respond to a call. One could even imagine that this image represents the changing of the guard, as the driver's side door sits open and ready to go to the next call, because the job will never end, it will just be completed by another firefighter.
